Objectives of Fund

The aims of the Active Travel Grants Programme are to:

  • Encourage and support more people to walk and cycle for everyday journeys.
  • Improve communities’ health and wellbeing by getting people more physically active.
  • Reduce the negative environmental impacts of climate change.

Value Notes

Grants of up to £3,000 are available.

Match Funding Restrictions

In-kind contribution in the form of volunteer participation is highly encouraged. Applications with match funding will be prioritised.

Who Can Apply

Any constituted community group in Scotland that has its own bank account can apply.

Community organisations and registered community charities such as community councils, development trusts and community woodland groups working in Scotland can also apply.

Restrictions

The following are not eligible for funding:

  • Reprinting existing leaflets or promotional materials.
  • Covering the costs of staff time.
  • Installing bins.
  • Producing feasibility studies or design schemes.
  • Planning application fees.
  • Purchasing bikes.
  • Retrospective costs.

Eligible Expenditure

The funding is for projects that make it easier for people to choose to walk and cycle when making short everyday journeys, for example, to shops, school, work or connect to public transport links.

Priority is given to projects that actively engage communities in:

  • Promoting and signposting active travel routes.
  • Improving and developing routes that will make it easier to walk and cycle when making short everyday journeys.
  • Maintaining active travel routes and ensuring that they are accessible.

The grants can be used to:

  • Create new paths and upgrade existing paths, making them more suitable for active travel.
  • Hire a contractor, plant and machinery.
  • Purchase tools and equipment that volunteers can use to maintain active travel routes within their communities.
  • Install signage and way markers to promote active travel routes.
  • Produce new leaflets or promotional materials focusing on active travel routes.
